On a rare sunny day, we decided on a bracing walk at Rowhill Nature Reserve for a change. After a quick lunch, we hit the trails at 1.30pm.

It was a stunningly beautiful day, with blue skies and brilliant sunshine.

Once up the first slope, we realised a mountain bike event (Brass Monkeys Series Round 2) was in progress. We paused and waited for participants to whiz past before crossing the intersecting trails.

The terrain is quite hilly, inhabited by low shrubs and gorse. The winding path took us through a sandy area before descending into the valley, where a wide path stretched out in both directions.

We continued right towards a large clearing that was being used as a carpark for the mountain bike event that day. Taking a sharp left, we climbed up a path with steep high banks, side stepped a muddy plain to enter a wooded area.

Surrounded by rows and rows of bare trees, I enjoyed the quietness and solitude that exuded from this unique spot.

We wandered around this picturesque up / down terrain for a bit before reconnecting with the trail.

With Claire leading the way, we rejoined the tarmac road that eventually leads to Caesar’s Camp. The sun was blazing strongly as we trudged up the sandy hill.

Halfway up the incline, we took a left and encountered a muddy area ridged with a mesh of tyre tracks. We could tell that the event had ended, as the barrier tapes were down.

Continuing our way down, the double tracked path through the heathland had puddles of water in several places. At one point, our way was totally barred and I had no choice but to get my feet wet.

Back on familiar territory, we topped off our workout with a final uphill. Though pleasantly tired, this rare opportunity to be out in the open, soaking in some sun in the middle of winter, is not to be missed.

By the way, this is the steep incline I ran up on my first run at Caesar’s Camp. Suffice to say I did not make the same mistake again.
